About

Valentin Létoquart used to just be a grape farmer selling grapes to the co-op in his sleepy town of Luberon in the Rhone delta until something clicked for him. One day he realized that everything he was tasting from his region was the same — a veritable sea of conformity uneasily sandwiched between the Southern Rhône heft and the industrial glut of Provence. What’s worse was that, he realized, the wines tasted bad – wines that said nothing of the rough-hewn beauty of the land or the backbreaking labor that went into making wine there. With that in mind, he decided to leave the co-op and learn from from similarly minded growers, most notably Eric Pfifferling of L’Angelore. Finally, in 2013, he created his own estate with one overarching goal: “We live in paradise – our wines should taste like it.”

And what a paradise Luberon is, a true synthesis of the deep heat of the southern Rhône and the constant winds and oceanic soils of Provence. So far, only winemakers from more prestigious parts of the Rhône have noticed Lubernon’s potential, quietly farming out production of oceans of wines that reliably taste big and expensive for anonymous cuvees. However, it is through winemakers like Valentin that the actual outlines of the region will be found and the terroir will be elucidated.

Since commencing his venture, Valentin has committed himself to making wine that actually spoke of the land, his work and his devotion to ethical and pure farming. In contrast to the landscape of lunar-surface like agriculture that marks the region, Valentin’s vines are blanketed with indigenous cover crops, lovingly “managed” by his animal herds with periodic applications of biodynamic teas. Valentin’s winery stands in front of a massive ridge of calcaire, topped with an almost shockingly green forest, providing both the necessary mountain shadow but also helping to trap needed moisture. As such, the wines are marked and shaped by the heat and the savagery of the landscape – but they are in no way marred by them. Rather, the punishing elements of the Rhône delta are chisels that help Valentin pare away the extraneous in his wines, leaving tightly coiled and angular wines of wild energy and joy.

In the cellar, Valentin pares down even further, eschewing the usage of any additives at any time, ever, including so2. This isn’t just dogma – Valentin suffered a faceful of powdered so2 about a decade ago during an accidental fall at the cooperative. As a result, he lost his sense of smell and taste for almost a year. “It is a poison,” he says of the molecule, and not a compromise he’s willing to make. That being said, Valentin is very aware of the potential for wine flaws and keeps a scrupulously clean cellar and also holds back any wine with issues so they can resolve themselves.

If you squint, you can taste the Pfifferling DNA in Valentin’s transcendent rosés — but at heart, the wines aren’t Tavel clones. Instead, they’re a lot more angular and rustic, with an irrepressible energy that makes you want to house an entire bottle. We’ve found the current release to be sound from day one and, now, after a bit of cellaring, to be absolutely thrumming with energy – even after being open for a day or two. That being said, we’re discovering that several of these cuveés, most notably ‘Les quilles de Joie’ and ‘Les Champs Magnetiques,’ have massive vin de garde energy. By all means, they’re ready to go now, but we’re absolutely socking away a few bottles for our future selves.

'La Lumière'

TYPE
Still / Red
VARIETAL
Grenache, Carignan
FARMING PRACTICE
Organic
DETAILS

Biodynamic. 50% Grenache, 50% Carignan. As in each vintage, ‘La Lumière’ is the domaine's 'surprise,' as it is partially estate fruit and partially purchased. 2022 was marked by intense drought in the Luberon, so certain parcels at the domaine couldn't be harvested. As in 2021, he was able to find some plots of old Carignan to purchase from local friends who farm to his standards. This fruit is vinified whole-cluster, bringing out 'slamming kirsch cherry,' as Val puts it, while his estate Grenache, here destemmed, brings roundness and some gentle, powder-fine tannins. Unfined, unfiltered, zero SO2. Side note: the cuvée name means 'The Light,' which Valentin also says 'is the measure of all things.'

Gros Vert

DETAILS

Biodynamic. 100% Gros Vert. Made from an ancient variety Valentin of Val de Combrès calls "an iconic cépage of Provence." It's a thick-skinned, long-ripening grape that's resistant to rot and often produces lower-alcohol wines. This pét-nat was made direct-press with temperature control to keep things stable, then bottled at 20g/l RS to encourage sparkling evolution in the bottle. Three months’ aging on full lees, then disgorged in December, then again three months of on remaining fine lees / sediment. Unfined, unfiltered, zero SO2. Val calls this a "sour-bomb, great for ápero in the sun."

'Les Champs Magnetiques'

VARIETAL
Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay
FARMING PRACTICE
Organic
DETAILS

Biodynamic. 40% Roussanne, 35% Vermentino, 25% Grenache Blanc. 'Champs Magnetiques' is always a négoce blend from Val de Combrès, as vigneron Valentin Létoquart's eight estate hectares are only red varieties--white grapes are rare in the Luberon appellation. Therefore, each year this wine is a bit different according to the fruit to which Val has access. In 2022, Val harvested Roussane and Vermentino in the duchy of Uzès, on deep, clay-rich, fresh soils which suffered less from drought than in his home village of Maubec; this vintage therefore has great freshness. The Roussane was picked slightly ever so slightly underripe, to preserve the salinity it still has at that time, and to prevent it from becoming too thick or heavy, as is often the case in standard wines of the area. Vermentino brings a light floral aroma, a more airy/herbal side. And Grenache, always, in red as in white, for what Val calls "delicious roundness!" Blended and vinified in stainless steel vats on fine lees, no fining, filtration, or SO2 added.

'Les Quilles de Joie!'

TYPE
Still / Red
VARIETAL
Syrah, Grenache
FARMING PRACTICE
Organic
DETAILS

Biodynamic. 70% Syrah, 30% Grenache. Vigneron Valentin Létoquart's most structured wine at his domaine, the only wine that he ages or gives a slightly more complicated élevage. 'Quilles de Joie' derives from a special plot selection of some of the best old vines on Val's roughly eight hectares. The Syrah is 50% destemmed; the rest is placed on top in whole clusters. Fermentation for 1 month. The process is somewhat the same as for Val's Grenache-based wines, but for shorter duration. Aging in neutral 228L and 500L barrels for two years; Val says this 'completely melts the tannins.' Val also indicates it's a slightly more 'classic' wine, preferably drunk at the table with food, but like everything else at Val de Combres, it's vinified without fining, filtration, and SO2. If the northern Rhône met the vibrancy of L'Anglore, with the freshness derived from having zero additions.
