Biodynamic. 50% Grenache, 50% Carignan. As in each vintage, ‘La Lumière’ is the domaine's 'surprise,' as it is partially estate fruit and partially purchased. 2022 was marked by intense drought in the Luberon, so certain parcels at the domaine couldn't be harvested. As in 2021, he was able to find some plots of old Carignan to purchase from local friends who farm to his standards. This fruit is vinified whole-cluster, bringing out 'slamming kirsch cherry,' as Val puts it, while his estate Grenache, here destemmed, brings roundness and some gentle, powder-fine tannins. Unfined, unfiltered, zero SO2. Side note: the cuvée name means 'The Light,' which Valentin also says 'is the measure of all things.'
Biodynamic. 100% Gros Vert. Made from an ancient variety Valentin of Val de Combrès calls "an iconic cépage of Provence." It's a thick-skinned, long-ripening grape that's resistant to rot and often produces lower-alcohol wines. This pét-nat was made direct-press with temperature control to keep things stable, then bottled at 20g/l RS to encourage sparkling evolution in the bottle. Three months’ aging on full lees, then disgorged in December, then again three months of on remaining fine lees / sediment. Unfined, unfiltered, zero SO2. Val calls this a "sour-bomb, great for ápero in the sun."
Biodynamic. 40% Roussanne, 35% Vermentino, 25% Grenache Blanc. 'Champs Magnetiques' is always a négoce blend from Val de Combrès, as vigneron Valentin Létoquart's eight estate hectares are only red varieties--white grapes are rare in the Luberon appellation. Therefore, each year this wine is a bit different according to the fruit to which Val has access. In 2022, Val harvested Roussane and Vermentino in the duchy of Uzès, on deep, clay-rich, fresh soils which suffered less from drought than in his home village of Maubec; this vintage therefore has great freshness. The Roussane was picked slightly ever so slightly underripe, to preserve the salinity it still has at that time, and to prevent it from becoming too thick or heavy, as is often the case in standard wines of the area. Vermentino brings a light floral aroma, a more airy/herbal side. And Grenache, always, in red as in white, for what Val calls "delicious roundness!" Blended and vinified in stainless steel vats on fine lees, no fining, filtration, or SO2 added.
Biodynamic. 70% Syrah, 30% Grenache. Vigneron Valentin Létoquart's most structured wine at his domaine, the only wine that he ages or gives a slightly more complicated élevage. 'Quilles de Joie' derives from a special plot selection of some of the best old vines on Val's roughly eight hectares. The Syrah is 50% destemmed; the rest is placed on top in whole clusters. Fermentation for 1 month. The process is somewhat the same as for Val's Grenache-based wines, but for shorter duration. Aging in neutral 228L and 500L barrels for two years; Val says this 'completely melts the tannins.' Val also indicates it's a slightly more 'classic' wine, preferably drunk at the table with food, but like everything else at Val de Combres, it's vinified without fining, filtration, and SO2. If the northern Rhône met the vibrancy of L'Anglore, with the freshness derived from having zero additions.
